Entry Requirements for Dogs and Cats
Moving a pet to the UK requires meeting strict veterinary and import rules. All requirements below must be completed before travel to avoid quarantine.
- Microchipping: Pets must have an ISO-compliant 15-digit microchip implanted before any vaccinations. The chip number will appear on all official documents.
- Vaccinations: All pets need current core vaccinations. Dogs require a 5-in-1 vaccine and cats a 3-in-1 vaccine (plus any local booster) at least 30 days before travel. Critically, pets must also have a rabies vaccination administered after microchipping, with at least 21 days’ wait before entry.- REMOVE The rabies shot must be valid (no more than one year old at travel).
- Rabies Titer (Blood Test): Leaving South Africa, pets require a rabies antibody titer test. This involves drawing a blood sample 30 days after the rabies vaccine. Travel can only occur at least 3 months after the blood draw (to confirm adequate antibodies). Plan ahead, as this makes the preparation period about 4 months total.
- Pet Health Certificate: South African pets need a Great Britain Pet Health Certificate (GBHC). This is an official vet certificate (Annex IV form) -REMOVE confirming all requirements are met. It must be issued by a private veterinarian within 5 days of travel. The GBHC (and any pet passport) is required for UK customs.
