European Union Pet Import Requirements

Before your pet can travel from South Africa to the European Union, the following requirements must be met.

Minimum Age Requirement

Dogs and cats must be at least 7 months old before they can travel to the European Union.

Microchip Identification

A microchip is mandatory for all pets travelling to the EU. The microchip:

  • Must be implanted before any vaccinations are administered.
  • Must be registered on the manufacturer’s database.
  • Must be readable and compliant with international standards.

Any rabies vaccination administered before microchipping is considered invalid and will need to be repeated.

Rabies Vaccination

All pets must have a valid rabies vaccination administered after the microchip has been implanted. The vaccination must be:

  • At least 30 days old before travel.
  • Not older than 12 months at the time of travel.

This is one of the most important requirements for entry into the European Union.

Annual Vaccinations

General vaccinations must also be up to date before travel:

  • Dogs: current 5-in-1 vaccination
  • Cats: current 3-in-1 vaccination

These vaccinations must be older than 30 days, and not older than one year at the time of travel.

Rabies Titre Test

The European Union requires a Rabies Antibody Titre Test for pets travelling from South Africa. The process includes:

  • The blood sample must be taken at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination.
  • The test result must be 0.5 IU/ml or higher.
  • After the blood draw, there is a mandatory waiting period of three calendar months before travel is permitted.

Because of this waiting period, planning your pet’s relocation well in advance is highly recommended.

Veterinary Health Certificate

A veterinary health certificate must be issued by a South African private veterinarian confirming:

  • All import requirements have been met.
  • Your pet is healthy and fit for travel.
  • The certificate has been signed and stamped by the veterinarian.

State Veterinarian Endorsement

Before departure, the health certificate must also be endorsed by the State Veterinarian. Sky Companion provides the correct documentation and assists with this process to ensure everything is completed accurately.

Once issued and endorsed, the certificate remains valid for five days.
