Pet Relocation to Mauritius from South Africa

Port Louis, Grand Baie, Tamarin, Curepipe or anywhere else in Mauritius.

Get in touch

Tell us about your move and your lovely pets, and we’ll get back to you.

Moving to Mauritius with your pet is a short flight across the Indian Ocean, but the island’s import process is anything but simple. Mauritius applies strict rules to protect its animal health, and no variations are permitted unless explicitly stated, so every test, vaccination and document needs to be in order.

Whether you’re relocating to Port Louis, Grand Baie, Tamarin, Curepipe or anywhere else in Mauritius, Sky Companion manages your pet’s journey from start to finish, from vaccinations and blood tests to the import permit, flights and quarantine.

Mauritius also has requirements many owners don’t expect: all pets must be sterilised, and the Boerboel is among the banned breeds. Because the rabies vaccination must be more than 6 months old on the day of travel, plan for at least six months of preparation.

Mauritius Pet Import Requirements

Before your pet can travel from South Africa to Mauritius, the following requirements must be completed.

Minimum Age Requirement

Dogs and cats must be 7 months or older to be eligible for entry into Mauritius.

Microchip Identification

A microchip is mandatory. The microchip must:

  • Be registered on the manufacturer’s database.
  • Be implanted before any other procedures, including vaccinations.

Rabies Vaccination

The rabies vaccination must be administered after microchip implantation. At the time of travel, it must be:

  • Older than 6 months.
  • No older than 1 year.

This applies to both primary and booster vaccinations. Any rabies vaccination given before microchipping will be invalid.

Rabies Titre Test

Mauritius requires a rabies titre test. Requirements include:

  • Blood drawn at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination.
  • A minimum antibody level of 0.5 IU/ml.
  • A 3-calendar-month waiting period from the date of the blood draw before travel.

Annual Vaccinations

General vaccinations must be older than 30 days but no older than 1 year before travel:

  • Dogs: 5-in-1 vaccination and Leptospirosis vaccination
  • Cats: 3-in-1 vaccination and Feline Calicivirus vaccination

Sterilisation Requirement

All pets must be sterilised before travelling to Mauritius.

Female pets must not be pregnant at the time of travel.

Additional Testing for Dogs

Within 45 days of departure, dogs must test negative for:

  • Ehrlichiosis
  • Brucella canis

Health Certificate

A health certificate must be issued by a South African private veterinarian, confirming that all requirements are met and your pet is fit for travel. The certificate must be:

  • Signed and stamped by the vet.
  • Endorsed by the State Veterinarian.
  • Include your pet’s parasite treatment.

The certificate is valid for 10 days from the date of issue. We provide the completed health certificate for your vet to sign.

Import Permit and Quarantine

An import permit is required before your pet can travel.

Pets are subject to 5 days of quarantine on arrival. Food is not provided in quarantine, so please bring your pet’s food on arrival.

Post-Quarantine Registration

After quarantine, pets must be registered with the local government.

A registration fee applies. It is not included in our quote and is paid at the time of registration.

The following breeds are not permitted entry into Mauritius:

  • American Pit Bull Terrier
  • Blue Nose Pit Bull
  • Red Nose Pit Bull
  • American Staffordshire Terrier
